when the balance is unbalanced

Oh, hello.

It’s been a while!

So….I started that other blog, about Running. And I seem to be doing a lot of that lately (running). I’ve also started doing a lot of writing for other blogs and websites. And, well, those are my excuses.

This little blog has fallen out of the balance!

I ran another 13.1 last weekend, and another Race Report will be up in the morning. I wrote it before I finished unpacking and after I went to Target.

Ya know, Priorities.

On a completely unrelated note – It’s warm and I want to shop! Ah, I love Spring/Summer clothing so so much. If I could change whats “appropriate” for business-casual, I’d dress in a cute tee, fun necklace, shorts and flats every day.

Or, if I could actually shop right now, maybe something like this –> LAX styyyle.

KIDDING. That’s awful.

I had about 3/4 of a post written, was typing up the last paragraph, did something crazy and somehow deleted the entire thing.

Oh really WordPress?? It’s gonna be one of those days?! Fine.

The title should make no sense unless I decide to delve back into my story. We’ll see.

Today is my Friday, so I’m finding nothing can make me even Want to complain. Not even the fact that it’s pouring outside for the first time in what feels like months, and I have no idea where my Umbrella is.

Can we just appreciate the fact that I Don’t Know where that thing is?? Because for the last four years, it rained So much that I religiously kept an umbrella by my bag and brought it with me if there was even a hint of cloud-cover. And now? I can’t remember the last time I had it with me, and consequently have no clue where I put it. Even if I did get a little wet walking to the Metro this morning, and a little soaked walking across the street from the Metro to work. Tomorrow it’s supposed to be sunny and 60. That’s soon enough for me.

My family has been in Mexico all week, and I haven’t heard anything since they flew out of Phoenix on their way down. I  just keep hoping they didn’t go down in one of the many plane crashes that seem to be plagueing our skies lately, or try any Narcotics and/or get gunned down in the drug war.

That might be a little dramatic. But. I’m serious about hoping they don’t get gunned down. It’s craziness there right now!

Their return is scheduled for this Saturday, so about every five seconds of the race I’ll be thinking ‘I hope they’re baaack!”. An entire week without texting my Sis the random things that I find hilarious is killing me! I bought a card the other day at Target (the purchase itself says a Lot. I NEVER buy cards.) and can’t begin to explain how badly I needed to call her and tell her about it. She is the Queen of hilarious random cards, always finding them for the perfect occasion.  This one had Fat baby (rolllls-n-all) sitting on a training-toilet with the Determined look of constipation on his face. Inside read: “Oh POOP, another birthday.”

I almost started crying from hysteric laughter in the middle of the Target card aisle. Omg.

Why doesn’t Microsoft Word have some sort of T-9 ish feature? I’ve been working on a document all morning and have to keep typing the same words and, ugh. So much work. Word recognition?! That’d be awesome.

Last night we joined the masses in Business Casual for a post-work Happy Hour in Georgetown. Nothing says Wednesday like $2 drafts and absolutely zero worries on the mind. Just sayin’.

On a closing note -I have tomorrow off to driiiive to Pittsburgh. Just another reason that the rain outside and spending the day in front of a computer doing work and having a post deleted on accident will not alter my I-love-Thursday!!! mood.

In honor of this being my 222-nd post, I’m gonna roll with it. Things in twos. Yessss.

This weekend I’ll be taking my second road trip to see my roomie/bfffff Em. I’m honestly surprised I haven’t gone to see her more since I’ve been in MD, but then I remember that she also came here, twice. And we all met up in State College, once. Oh, damnit. That doesn’t fit the theme, but it still happened. So, um, roadtrip. I’m excited!!!

Today, two people Google-searched the words “Classy Outfits”, and it led them to my blog. Hiii, I’m so flattered! I hope you found something they were looking for. I do try to keep things classyyy around here, you know.

Last night I finally registered for my second half-marathon in Pittsburgh (fourth overall). It’s the same one I ran in last March, and I decided against stepping it up to the 30K. No thanksss. While it would be the perfect interim race between a half and a full, and I’ll probably wish I had just sucked it up and done it….I just want my 13.1. I want to see if I can beat my time from last year. I also saved $5 by registering for one race over the other, and by registering by 12/31. If that’s not budget friendly, I don’t know what is. That’s gonna buy me my second drink tonight.

On Wednesday I went on a cleaning spree. I thoroughly cleaned the bathroom, bleach, windex, scrubbing, drying, re-arranging (toiletries), etc. This has only happened twice since we moved in. Hmm……I probably need to work on that. Granted, it’s a joint effort. We switch off.  So…..I guess that’s okay.

After our usual two-round-of-drinks at some random restaurant/bar + dinner tonight, the roomie and I are renting “The Dark Knight” (along with everybody else, I know). Guess how many times I’ve seen it??? If you didn’t say 2, where the heck have you been. I’m still excited though, Heath Ledger gives me goosebumps. I’m usually not so into the violent stuff, but this movie defies everything. Amazing.

Alright. I’m done. That’s enough twos .  Now I have to start preparing for 333. I’ve got lots of writing to do.

This is what I know

Filed under: about me,blogging, nutrition — by heatherdc @ 12:06 am

If you read me over here on this little blog even once a week you probably know I graduated in May. And that I’m borderline obsessed (um, definitely obsessed) with my alma mater (…..PENN STATE. Whooo.)

But what I don’t talk about as much is what my major was. I talk about it here and there, but ya know. That’s not as interesting and I’m here to write, to get away from science and diseases and ahhh.

Then, I go and read blogs that talk a lot about exercise, running, diets, food, cooking, etc. So, really, I never get away from it. Which is awesome. Clearly I love it all. And I’m always up to learn something new. And they pose questions about all of the above, and I’m like “Hi! I can help! I mean, ya know…if you want…”. I’m always pleasantly surprised by the response. A lot of you have questions, and I could talk Nutrition allll day!  (and Disney and running and football…..ehhh, we won’t get into that).

I’ve never done this before, but I’m opening this up to You. If you don’t respond, it’s cool. That just means maybe I’ll spend more time working on the homework I probably should be doing anyway. Dangit. But! If you do, then sweeeet. I’ll dedicate a post to You.

With answers, obviously.

Things I’ve learned after writing to you 164 times

It is officially my Blog birthday. One year of blogging! Yessssss.

A year ago I logged onto I had been sitting in front of a computer at work for three hours. It was after shopping online, and compulsively checking e-mail, and stalking facebook, and finishing homework and thinking “Omgggg what can I possibly do to entertain myself for one more hour?!”

Uhh, blog? Sure. And This is what I came up with.

I’ve learned quite a bit since then. 365 days, and 164 posts later, I’m still learning.

::I never thought I’d be a “regular” post-er. Always figured I’d just write when I had time. Then it changed from being something I thought I should do, to something I wanted to do. Even something somebody else wanted me to do.

::For a while I had no idea how to insert pictures. Uh, we won’t elaborate on that. I realize this is quite easy to do. I still wonder where to draw the line; show the eyes? block out the face? just say, who caressss, and put them up? I might take them down eventually, but for now, they’re around.

::Some posts toe the line that I have yet to draw, and I’m okay with that…..for now. I constantly wonder when it gets “too” personal, and usually refrain from anything close. Every once in a while I’ll give you some insight into the wonder that is me, I’ll give you a story or two, and I’ll share a little of the people who mean the most to me. We’ll keep at that….for now.

::I’d much rather share random stories and thoughts, than try to keep a “theme”. I like to run (and train, and race!!), and cook, and experiment with recipes, and take road trips, and lounge around, and study, and watch TV on DVD, and have Cosmos, and read books, and then hop on here if I think about something interesting. And that’s just how it works.

::When I incorporate things I learn from my “regular reads” into day-to-day conversation, I feel like I’m exposing a guilty pleasure. And don’t we looove it? It’s like reading a PEOPLE magazine and then telling your friend “Uhh, did you see that Jen and John broke UP!? I know, riiight?!”. Except it’s more like “Well this blog I read about ____ , blah blah blah”. Am I the only one who does this?! Gah, I hope not. What can I say, I like your blogs. I read them. And sometimes I’m entertained enough to talk about them. Be flattered. Yes, be very flattered.

::I’m finallyyyy learning some basics of html-coding and how to add stuff by myself in the “text box”. I can’t even tell you how much fun I think this is! It might only go so far as putting in text and images and horizontal lines, but we’re goin from there. And it’s funnnnn.

Now, a year later, I have an online documentary of my senior year of college, and the transition I’ve made into the next phase of life. That right there….is priceless. And a little crazy.

I thought about trying to come up with 164 things I learned after 164 posts. Aren’t you glad I ruled that one out? Ehhh yah, me too.

Happy blogging!

Sharing the Love

Filed under: blogging — by heatherdc @ 10:30 pm

Apparently it’s the equivalent of February as far as blogging award seasons go right now. (ya know, because in February there are like 100 award shows. That’s in February, right? If not, just go with it.)

“Blog Awards” have been gettin busy lately. So I am here to share the love! But first I’ll go ahead and ‘toot my own horn’. Just for a little bit….

The other day I got a friendly notice from my WordPress buddies saying I had a new “Incoming Link” from a lovely lady over here. She gave me my very FIRST Blogger award!! I’m not gonna lie, I was pretty excited about this. And here it is, the Arte y Pico award….

According to these “rules” (that go along with the blog award thing), I do this:

  1. Choose 5 blogs that you consider deserving of this award based on creativity, design, interesting material, and overall contribution to the blogger community, regardless of the language.
  2. Post the name of the author and a link to his or her blog by so everyone can view it.
  3. Each award-winner has to show the award and put the name and link to the blog that has given her or him the award.
  4. The award-winner and the presenter should post the link of the “Arte y pico” blog, so everyone will know the origin of this award.
  5. Please post these rules.

And the “5 Blogs” that I choose to pass this on (because I read them and I like them soooo, maybe you will too!) are….

*Tojours Complexe: because she has amazing style, and writes about it, and provides pictures, AND has really good taste in boots. And cause she’s my blogging buddy, and that’s a fun thing to have.
*Tortious:because I absolutely Love her clever writing style. Never boring, never uneventful.
*Sassy Molassy:because she inspires me to run, and be honest, and she takes cool pictures! And she gave me my second award (we’ll get to that) and that was exciting!
*I’ll think about that tomorrow:because she got me started with this whole blogging thing. She might be missing as of late, but with good excuse….i.e. traveling all over the continental US in a Weinermobile. Ooh, now I got your attention didn’t I? Yah. Check it out.
*Mike’s Got Nothin’:because he posts the cutest pictures everrr of his little kiddies, and he’s making a really brave, and successful, effort at something he calls “40 by 40”.

So, like I said, miss Sassy gave me the second award. It looks a little somethin’ like this….

It’s even in spanish. Kind of. If I remember correctly, “premio” means prize. Yup.
Rules again. Real quick:
1. Post the logo on el blogo.
2. Add a link to the person who awarded you.
3. Nominate at least five other blogs.
4. Add links to those blogs on your blog.
5. Leave a message for your nominee on their blog.

Soooo, once again, because I read them and am thoroughly entertained by them regularly. And that makes a good blog. Enjoy! In no particular order, the “winners” are…..
*Go Lightly *Playful Professional *Starting Over at 24 *Angilio *Dooce

Again, many many thanks to Sass and PP !! And wow, that is a lot of link-inserting goin on up there. So go check them out!

–>Note to the “winners”: I realize this ‘blog award’ stuff goes around a lot. And seriously, I won’t add a link for quite some time after this. Gah. So if you don’t feel like ‘passing the torch’, that’s juuuust fine. As long as you keep writing so I can keep being entertained. Deal? 😉

::Afterthought::I’m not sure if it’s in the “rules” that you can’t pass an award to somebody who already gave you one? If so, that’s too bad. My site, my rules.
::Also, I have no idea when the “real” Blog awards are. Anybody?? That’d probably be pretty interesting too.

Hi, I’m _____ & I “blog” because…

Filed under: about me,blogging, random — by heatherdc @ 12:09 am

Last summer LB had a job working with these two fine people, M & M. They “blog”. She came to visit me for a weekend and let me in a little secret….she started blogging. My initial reaction was…..surprised? I thought it was pretty cool, but not something I could ever do. I’m not a “blogger”. I mean, it’s like ‘personal’ right? Like an online “journal” or something? What if people you know read it? What if you reveal too much about yourself?

Well, I started reading her blog, and I really liked it.

*wheels start turning…*

I had always said I wanted to be a “writer”. Not as in short stories and novels, not as in flowery fiction romantic whatevers, and not as in memoirs or biographies. I wanted to be a writer as in, I Love this website and I want to write stuff like THAT! And it hit me, if I want to write for a website, why not start by writing for my own??

That’s basically what these blogs are, right? This is MY page. My website. This is Me, now. I put whatever I want on this little thing. I control how it looks (ummmm…to an extent. Hi, I have no idea how to write a CSS code, but I would LOVE to know) and I make it purple, because I like purple. Sure, it’s not going to show up if you put my full name into a “google” search, but it’s here and it’s mine. Some people who know me know about it, but I’m not passing out fliers to advertise it.

I will admit, it took me a while to actually do it. It scared me that my writing would be accessible to the public. It’s here for all to see, which also means it’s here for all to criticize or to love. But that’s the reality of writing, is it not? If I want to have opportunities to do it in the future, I have to have something to show for it, right? I have to know that I’m okay with knowing that anybody can see these words. That’s the point of having websites and magazine in the first place. You want people to read them!!

So this was born. It started off a little rough, but I’ve gotten more used to writing about the ‘everyday’ things and the ‘cooking’ things and the ‘little weird things about me’. I don’t go too in depth about anything personal, and probably never will. I’m not sure why, maybe it’ll come at some time.

Now here I am, seven months later, and I “blog” because…..

::I have moved on to step 2! I was contacted by a fabulous person and now I write for this site once a week, about my life now & over the next year or so. Graduating, job-searching, baking, working, shopping, running…..the things I learn & want to pass on in the process.

::Now I am addicted to writing and reading a lot of other great blogs!

::It allows me to meet some pretty fabulous people, like this girl. And exchange fabulous e-mails! Because really, who isn’t addicted to e-mail? Don’t lie. And someone else who gave me tips while I was training and loves Stacy & Clinton as much as I do!

::Umm…I’m really entertained by the random things people type into a Google search. Seriously, weird. For instance, today I saw “adding chili to brownie mix”. What are you doing adding CHILI to BROWNIE mix?!?! Please stop now!! Because, ew, that’s not right. Chili to cornbread maybe? Chocolate to brownie mix?? What are you trying to do?? Agh, I’m so confused.

Anyway. Hi, I’m Heather. I’m totally a blogger.
