Pictures instead

In less than 6 hours we’re off – an all out family road trip! Which means my mind is a little blank. All I can brainstorm is what I forgot to pack and how the heck I’m going to entertain myself in a car for 12 hours (with No Internet. oh man). In other words…still blank.

Anyway. I got a new camera for X-mas, and have had fun experimenting with it. So, in lieu of a real post….I give you this. Life (for the past week) in a few photos……

Hangin’ at Havana Beach

Filed under: hangin' out with the siblings, holidays,Summer times — by heatherdc @ 1:22 am

LB’s friends have this expression “______’s (insert name) in London!!”
They use this to describe somebody who is faaaar gone. Meaning drunk. Veryyyy drunk.
You have left the sober world, and entered, uhhh London?
You get it, right? Right.

We had a 4th of July party on Friday at our casa. Lots of family friends, food, drinks, water-balloon launching off our deck…you know, the works.

And where was I on Friday night? Oh, I was hangin’ at Havana Beach.

((Recipe: Rum, pineapple juice, and a splash of ginger ale))

After about five too many drinks, it was definitely an interesting fiesta. And an interesting day at the hospital on Saturday. Ehhhhh. I had to take a 20 minute nap in a “meditation room” (how appropriate, I know), because I barely had the energy (coordination, balance….) to walk from room to room. Seriously, Not Good.

According to my sister, when you wake up saying “Omg, I’m never drinking. Ever. Again.”…..that’s when you know you had a good night! Ha. Not so sure I agree, but we’ll roll with it…. 😉

Even though I wasn’t allowed to hold a sparkler, it was a fun little party. It’s kind of a tradition around our house to have a ‘summer’ party-whether it’s at the beginning, for the 4th, or in August. This is the first time in a few years that we’ve all been able to come home for this weekend, so we went all out. Unfortunately I was also working every day, but I survived.

Yes, this last one is juuust in case you were wondering what exactly a ‘water balloon launcher’ is. Um, it’s exactly what it sounds like. And what is the boy’s faaavorite activity at dinner parties? Launching water balloons. Yup. Actually, it’s really entertaining to watch. Sometimes they go about two feet and get them all soaked. Sometimes it goes about 300 yards and we are all like “oooooh”. Sometimes it hits the target they are aiming for (shed at the park, down below), and then we’re Really impressed.

p.s. I’m in the white, the Sis is in green. Yes, we look alike.

Anyway.
Hope you all had a funnnn holiday weekend!

Sombreros, Pinatas & Cervezas

Border Control: “Country of Citizenship?”

Me: “Uh, United States.”

BC: “What was your business in Mexico?”

Me: (Drinking cheap beer, and eating endless bowls of chips & salsa?) “Shopping in the mercado…”
Side note…I didn’t actually buy anything.

BC: “Well where are you bags?”

Me: “Oh I didn’t get anything, but the kid behind me has four piñatas!”

Are you wondering what would somebody do with four piñatas? Me too. But when you’re about 5 beers deep. with a group of good friends, and shopping in Mexico, this is what happens.

I am back in the desert for my Spring Break. Before coming home I spent the weekend with my siblings at their university.  The little sis (L) is a freshman, and my older brother (J) is about a year into getting his MBA. Since this time next year I’ll be working (who knows where), I figured I should take advantage of the opportunity to visit them while they are both still there.

They only live about an hour away from a border town in Mexico, so we gathered up the troops and took a little day trip. Yes, it feels weird to say I went to Mexico “for the day”.

A group of 9 of us headed down, crossed the border, and spent the afternoon drinking beer (cerveza) at $1.50 each and bargaining down the “Mercado” vendors.  One of J’s friends decided that he collected piñatas (as of that day), so he bought Four of them.  Two of them were the size of a small child, in the shape of Shrek and Mr. Incredible. I’m not even kidding. Other purchases included shot glasses, t-shirts, candy, lamps, large Somebreros and more cerveza.  Some of them have been down there enough in the last four years that one of the waitors from the outdoor restaurant/bar at the Mercado recognizes them and bought us about three free rounds of drinks. Gracias amigos!

This “mexico” isn’t the hotel-lined beach and tropical get-away that some might imagine. Rather, it’s small (tiny) business after small business, with the owners standing outside in an attempt to lure you in. It’s jam packed, dirty streets with bums, noise, beggars, random college students and locals.  It’s knock-off sunglasses, purses and clothes at a mere $5 per item. It’s small bars and restaurants with only 10 tables that serve you mixed drinks for $2 and don’t check your ID. It’s striving to survive and making money off of people like us who don’t mind spending $20 on huge hats and little shotglasses.

It’s a day trip with friends to make for some interesting stories and good times.
